About Ellen Beukelman

For as long as I can remember, I have loved wild plants. Watching them return year after year brings both deep comfort and pure joy— like the most loyal of friends. Growing up I spent my summers on an island in the Finnish archipelago, a place of wildflower fields, old pine forests, soft moss, and bright seaweed. A wonderland both wild and free, it became the perfect playground where curiosity led me to discover, connect and fall in love with the flora. My mother, also a lover of the wild flowers, taught me the names of the wild plants surrounding us there. This was the very start, and ever since, plants have been my constant companions and teachers of the silent language of nature. This has stayed with me wherever my itchy feet have taken me.

As a teenager, I began traveling, and my love for plants traveled with me. I asked questions, listened, and learned from anyone willing to share their knowledge—absorbing the old traditions and the many ways different cultures work with plants. Along the way, the world of medicinal plants opened up to me. Like so many others, my journey into herbal healing began with a personal struggle—debilitating period pain. Same drain, month after month, days of agony. I became determined to find a solution. From help and advice I started bringing in herbs to help me. One German man, who studied women's health, suggested lady’s mantle, my Czech friend recommended yarrow, and a third person spoke of silverweed. Herb by herb, I created a blend that finally worked! First for myself, then for my friends, then for the friends of my friends. Sharing is caring. That experience became a turning point, fueled my passion and drew me deeper into the world of plant medicine.

For years, I taught myself through books, conversations, trials and errors. I brewed tinctures, cooked salves, fermented wild plants, and gathered herbs for tea. I planted gardens, only to realize I was more excited by the weeds than the crops I was trying to grow. Effortless joy and wildness - that is where my heart is.

Eventually, my fascination became an all-consuming love. I read about plants, dreamed about them, and carried them with me daily. It was time to dive even deeper. Summer 2023 and 2024, I enrolled in a course with Alexandra de Paoli, (Läkeväxter till vardags, Medicinal plants in everyday life). A course focusing on wild plants, their active substances and how to preserve and prepare herbs for medicinal uses.

In the autumn of 2024, began herbalism studies (Nature’s Medicine) at Biskops Arnö. A full time study focusing mostly on the western / nordic herbal medicine, both modern and historical, as well as folk traditions. But also with elements of Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine. An education having a holistic approach to natural healing. A study combining hands-on working with herbs, gardening, product making in forms of salves, teas, tinctures, soaps, creams, oils, pills etc. With in-depth study and intellectual learning about herbal medicine. A place where I could weave together the wisdom, tradition and the science of herbs. All combined with my lifelong love of wild plants.

Today, I host herbal walks, organize workshops and herb festivals, I produce herbal salves, teas, tinctures and various other products. My journey with plants is one of connection, respect, and continuous discovery — one that I am always excited to share.
